Sam Burgess's guide to Brecon Jazz
We were just at Brecon with Curios. As with most people, Sam has a 'photo face', which he reserves for special occasions. Here he is deploying it to great effect in the beautiful Welsh market town of Brecon.
The jazz awards were rather fun. And for us it was obviously fantastic to win our category. The biggest actual cheer though was the one I found myself uncontrollably uttering as Kit Downes was announced as the rising star. Get in!
After the show was the typical performance-drinking and late-night jam. Lots of people all happy and shouty. As I left Ronnie Scott's, no longer able to stand up, taking to the stage were Jamie Cullum, Nigel Kennedy, Gwilym Simcock and Gary Husband, along with our own Sam Burgess. As far as I know, it's still going on now... I also met Mark King, a childhood hero, and managed (I think) to not disgrace myself too much, though I was obviously a jibbering, sycophantic wreck. Thank goodness John Taylor had disappeared before I could find him.
Anyway, such events always come at a bit of a price, and as I type this it seems there is no over-the-counter pain relief that can reach the target of my head quickly enough. Joshua, young hellraiser that he is, retired to bed early with a nice mug of cocoa. He will learn.
