Released on February 22, 2017, through Disruptor Records and Columbia, “Something Just Like This” arrived as the second single from The Chainsmokers’ debut album Memories…Do Not Open and the lead track from Coldplay’s Kaleidoscope EP.
Written by Andrew Taggart, Chris Martin, Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, and Will Champion, with production from The Chainsmokers and DJ Swivel, this collaboration was largely freestyled by Martin during their first studio session together.
The track blends future bass with electropop, building on pulsing synths and a warm, uplifting melody that feels both intimate and anthemic. Chris Martin’s tender vocals float over electronic flourishes, creating this beautiful tension between Coldplay’s emotional storytelling and The Chainsmokers’ festival-ready production.
There’s something achingly vulnerable about how Martin references mythological heroes and comic book legends, only to admit he’s nothing like them.
